As I opened the door of the facility to leave, I was met with a mild breeze off the ocean blowing inland from the coast, carrying the scent of salty sea as it welcomed me out of the stale air of the building. I headed towards the car that waited out front to take me back to the hotel. An eerie vacancy of life sharpened my gaze in search of any movement. There wasn’t a single person in sight, not even the driver, Mr. Tellmin.

I stepped off the curb to see around the car when a sudden force hit me from behind, sending me straight into the pavement. I shifted to my side to see three shadowy figures standing around me. They had no faces, just empty darkness in a cloak of black, hoods drawn over what should be heads.

“We know who you are, Light Carrier. Call off your mission.” It was as though I’d been transported to Ardan minus the forest.

But I hadn’t. Those figures were in my world, and the reality hit me that I could die facing shadowy puppets of death without any weapon.

Each of the dark figures moved closer. I felt a pinch at my throat as some invisible force tried to remind me of the strength I dared to tempt. As if on instinct, I lifted my palm to the sky, and saw the blue-white sparks crackle to life. But as the flame grew the hooded shapes collapsed in a heap like tossed laundry and then spun upward in a cloud of black before I could ever strike. In their place stood Matt and Juno. They tucked their swords into the inside of their coats. As they did, the city came to life as though nothing had happened.

“You didn’t think you’d be doing this all alone, did you?” Aria’s voice called out from behind me.

“Watch your arm, Sara,” Elise said, coming closer. I glanced at my left arm to see a fair amount of blood trickling down from the elbow, a cut from the sharp edge of stone on the pavement. “Here.” She handed me several tissues that I quickly pressed against the wound.

A smile stretched across my face at seeing them, but faded at the realization that one person was missing.

“Are you okay?” Juno asked, extending a hand to help me up.

“Yeah, but where did you come from? I never saw you, or them.”

“They used a shield that made
